As a lacrosse coach you should focus on several fundamental skills during your first several practices. These skills will be called upon all season as your players progress. The success of your team as well as the individual player will depend on the basic fundamentals.
Passing and Catching Drills
The most basic skill set in youth lacrosse or lacrosse at ANY level is passing and catching. Without developing this skill from the beginning it will be VERY difficult to be competitive or have FUN for that matter.
The good news is that a few simple, yet fun drills and a lot of practice and repetition is all that is really needed to master the skill of passing and catching.
Scooping Drills
The next skill you should teach your players to master is scooping. Over the course of every game the ball will be on the ground countless times. Without the skill required to scoop the ball quickly off the ground you will have a very unmotivated team.
Fortunately just like passing and catching the art of scooping can me easily practiced with just a few simple, well-organized drills any player can become a master of scooping.
Dodging Drills
Dodging is simply another word for beating the defender. If you don't practice this and practice this well it will show up on the field. At the youth level especially young inexperienced lacrosse players can be rattled or confused by defensive pressure.
Using a set of well designed drills you can simulate this game-like situations and dodging can become second nature or muscle memory to your players.
Shooting Drills
Shooting skills are the last fundamental skill set that we focus on. Why? Because if your players cannot pass-n-catch, scoop or dodge they will never be in a position to score.
One thing is for sure, it is normally very easy to motivate your team to practice shooting because EVERYONE likes to score points.
By focusing on the fundamentals of shooting and simulating real situations our shooting drills have proven to be extremely effective.
